Nellore has the name of Vikrama Simhapuri. During the tenth century, the name of Nellore Vikrama Simhapuri appears in inscriptions in historical poems.

How did Nellore get its name?
Nelli means amla in Tamil. As Shiva lingam was found under the amla tree, the area where the Shiva lingam was found under the amla tree was gradually called Nellie Ooru. The area where Mulasthaneswara was located became Nellore. Vikrama Simhapuri became Nellore after the emergence of Mulasthaneswara Swami. Manuma Siddhi Prabhu who ruled in the 13th century. There are historical evidences that the Maha Rajagopuram was built. This gopuram has three floors with pancha kalasala. On this gopuram there are many idols of Lord Shiva and Maha Jaganmata
